- the amount of energy used in a certain period
- metabolism
- a series of chemical reactions that occur in a living organism to sustain life. May be categorized as anabolic or catabolic

- application of nutrition knowledge to a practical daily eating plan focused on providing the fuel for physical activity

- functionally organized unit - can be at cellular level or higher level (whole body)

- the study of the relations between heat, work, temperature, and energy
